From the Fire

When we think of fire we think of flames, heat, destruction and power

the three artists chosen for this exhibition have mastered the fired harnessing its power to create beautiful objects

Judy Blake uses a thick walled clay container to protect the pots from the flames but relies on the heat of the fire to burn the combustibles which give the pieces their unique markings.

Carol Rossman uses the raku method of firing. On bisques pieces: a pattern is laid out with tape to mask glazes from the pot. The pieces are then glazed in multiple layers. The masking tape is the removed leaving unglazed clay expose. The pieces are then placed in a gas fired kiln and fired to 1000 degrees C and pieces are red hot. at this point they are removed from the kiln and placed in bins of combustible material. fire flashes and the bin is closed smothering the flame. Smoke soaks into the unglazed clay. Glazes do their magic!

Vera Vicente in urban Montreal uses and electric kiln with a metal trash can inside she rests the pot inside and adds combustibles and the lid and relies on the buring to create the markings on her pots.

Also available from the secondary market are works by Judy Blake and Vera Vicente

“Sprout” 2024 Casein/oil on canvas 32x34

The works in Reed Weir’ solo exhibition were created with the intention of evoking a nostalgic essence reminiscent of vintage circus posters. Infused with vibrant colours, her paintings exude a whimsical allure, extending a warm welcome to viewers. Upon close observation, they unveil a more solemn reality, delicately weaving in subtle hints of the human condition. Much like a circus from long ago, each piece offers a promise of fantasy while carrying an undertone of a deeper reality.

Weir’s artistic process commences with an under-painted layer of casein (milk-based) paint, followed by additional layers in oils, and a finish that may include wax or damar varnish. On occasion, her works incorporate collage and gold leaf, adding layers of complexity to the visual narrative.

Reed Weir’s artworks are distinguished by their vibrancy and rich texture, resulting in pieces that emanate a luminosity that has been described as being illuminated by lightening.

Pansy Ass Ceramics Pride Edition

“In our work we explore gay male identity and culture through the medium of porcelain and the act of ornamentation. The fragility, elegance and prestige of porcelain and its traditional role in domestic life make it an exciting avenue to explore both alternative and popular themes of culture, identity and sexuality. Our work is predominantly slip-cast porcelain that we combine with hand-built elements.”

“Captivated by the possibilities of the clay I have since embarked on a journey of learning, discovery, and creation”

Célia Zveibil Brandão is a ceramic artist and educator. She is originally from São Paulo, Brazil, living and working in Toronto since 1990. She holds a degree in Graphic Design from Mackenzie University in São Paulo. Brandão has been creating functional and sculptural forms for the past 30 years. Known for her wood-fired pieces, Brandão incorporates a variety of techniques into her work. She runs the Ceramic Studio at the Miles Nadal Community Center since 1995 in addition to teaching at other studios.

My passion for the art of ceramics ignited when I was travelling through the Brazilian northeast in the late 1970’s. I came upon a small pottery village on the shores of the São Francisco river where I first saw kick wheels, and pots drying in the sun.

Winner of multiple awards, Brandão is published in three 500 series Lark Book publications and several international Ceramic Magazines. She has exhibited in Canada, USA, and her native Brazil.
